Background

More recently we have encountered wildly different growing seasons – with our crops differing by 4 or 5 weeks in some years. Is this going to be a continued trend or just a blip? We won’t know the answer to this unless we start collecting records!

Although many of us collect this sort of information in our own way, we would like to set up a standardised way of regularly recording key events during the growing season in a range of locations. This will allow us to map out what is happening each year. Over the longer term this will help us understand any longer-term influences of climate change so that we can tailor our advice accordingly. It will also help us to give better regional information so that our growing information is more relevant to individuals. We won’t have a crystal ball to predict the weather, but this will give us the insight to make better predictions as to what is likely to happen.
