This dwarf French bean is a little different to most. From a botanical point of view, it’s not one but two varieties of beans grown together, hence ‘Comrades’.

About 🔗

Vegetable Type: Dwarf French Bean
Date Added to the Heritage Seed Library: 2005

It’s thought to have been taken to the USA by Peace Corp volunteers who had been working in Yalta, Ukraine, in the early 1990s. It found its way to us via John Yeoman, author and founder of The Village Guild, who donated it in 2005.

The black seeds provide larger plants and a heavy yield of flat, green pods. The yellow seeds produce smooth yellow pods. Both are stringless and are suitable for use as a fresh or dried bean.

Why we save Ukrainian Comrades dwarf French bean 🔗

The region the Peace Corp workers were stationed in is in the Crimea, an area recognised as being part of Ukraine, but currently under Russian control. Crop diversity is often at risk in times of conflict so it’s important we hold this variety for safekeeping until stability in the region is established.
