Variety Champions Tomato
Marianna’s Peace tomato dates back to the turn of the 20th Century and stands out within our collection of over 140 tomatoes due to its back story.

About 🔗

Vegetable Type: Tomato
Date Added to the Heritage Seed Library: 2005

Marianna was a Czechoslovakian farmer’s daughter who was held captive by the Russians during World War Two. Against all odds, Marianna managed to escape by jumping from the truck that was transporting her and some school friends to Siberia. Despite being shot in the leg, she eventually reached the safety of Bavaria. Towards the end of the war Bavarian nationalists sought Allied support for the creation of an independent Bavaria, hence Marianna gaining refuge there.

These tomato seeds were a gift from her father before he died.

Marianna’s Peace tomato was donated to us in 2005 by John Yeomen of The Village Guild but it took a further eight years until we were able to share it with members for the first time.

Marianna’s Peace tomorrow produces very vigorous vines and large, pinkish-red, weakly ribbed fruits weighing around 500g each.

Saving this variety presents an extra challenge for our growers as, unlike most tomatoes, the flowers have stigma that protrude from the anther cone, so require isolating from other varieties of this type. We think it’s worth the effort though.

Why we save Marianna’s Peace tomato 🔗

Saving this variety is a lasting tribute to the resilience and bravery of a young girl growing up in terrible circumstances.
