About 🔗

Vegetable Type: Beetroot/Chard
Date Added to the Heritage Seed Library:

2024

MacGregor's Favourite beet is a dual-purpose 19th century Scottish variety grown for both its handsome, dark red, tender leaves and for its long, conical roots. It’s reported to have such beautiful leaves that it’s grown as an ornamental plant as well as to eat.

This particular variety was thought to have been lost, however we managed to acquire an initial batch of seeds in 2018 and then a second batch in 2023.

We will continue to bulk out this variety, and carry out research into its origins, including whether there’s a connection with Beatrix Potter as the name suggests.

Why we save Macgregor's Favourite Beet 🔗

We weren’t initially sure if we should call this one a beetroot or a chard. However, its ability to produce attractive, tasty leaves and a delicious suggests that it’s, actually, a bit of both so a really useful crop. It was almost lost once, and so we want to make sure that doesn't happen again!
