The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has committed to being 100% peat-free by 2025 as it trials alternative responsibly sourced growing media.

RHS gardens are currently 98% peat-free with the exception of some rare and exotic plants. They no longer sell peat-based bagged compost. And, perhaps most importantly, from 2025 all plants sold in its retail outlets will be peat-free – as well as those used in show displays.

Garden Organic welcomes these initiatives. “Peat has no place in the garden,” says James Campbell, Chief Executive. “For over 30 years we have campaigned against it, and we are particularly thrilled by these moves from such a powerful body as the RHS.

"Our own For Peat’s Sake campaign is pushing the peat agenda up in the horticultural world. Its aim is not just to take peat out of compost and potting mixes, but also to help gardeners everywhere be peat-free and proud!"
