Remembering Roger Hitchings

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of our friend and organic pioneer Roger Hitchings, who passed away on Monday 25 November after a short illness.

As well as his huge contribution to organic farming and horticulture, Roger was known for his kindness and wisdom

Roger worked at the Organic Research Centre for 14 years, latterly as a principal consultant – and during his lifetime made a huge contribution to organic farming and horticulture.

Garden Organic worked with him from the late 1990s in joint projects with the Organic Research Centre. Roger had a key role in these projects providing technical advice to organic farmers across the UK, many of whom were converting to organic growing for the first time.

His advice was very hands on, always involving a farm walk with the grower. He was also very active in many organisations that supported organic growers, including the Organic Growers Alliance, with which he continued to play a major role even after retirement.

Our research manager Dr Anton Rosenfeld remembers him as kind and supportive.

“Organic wisdom, kindness, beer and guitar playing will be my memories of Roger, not necessarily in that order. When I first joined HDRA (as Garden Organic was called then), I worked on several projects with him and commercial growers.

"I always looked forward to doing a farm walk when Roger was involved as I knew that I’d be learning a lot, and his positive spirit would lift the mood of trudging around a damp field of brassicas in the Cambridgeshire Fens in winter.”
