Co-op supermarkets are working with Westland Horticulture to sell New Horizon peat-free compost at its food stores and forecourts.

Hannah Rogers, from Garden Organic says: “This is fantastic news, and shows that retailers and garden centres are getting the message that peat simply isn’t necessary for the garden.

We congratulate the Co-op on making this important step change. Our campaign to ban peat, For Peat’s Sake, helps save the rare ecosystems in peat bogs, as well as reducing greenhouse gases.”

Co-op buyer for home and leisure Martin Spencer said: “We want to make it easier for our Members and customers to make small changes in their everyday lives which, together, add up to making a big difference to our environment. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our products and services, and looking for new and collaborative ways of working together with others to achieve those aims if we are to have a healthy, sustainable natural environment to pass on to future generations.”
