HSL 2021 Seed List - we’re almost ready
To say the preparation for this year’s seed list has been a challenge is a bit of an understatement. A disrupted growing season, seed packeting with social distancing, and now a national lockdown during dispatch time has kept us on our toes, but we’re pleased to say that we’re pretty much there, and - touch wood - are all set up to offer as close to normal service as possible.
There will be a few changes this year so we would urge all members to read the following carefully.
To be able to offer as much choice this year, and in upcoming years, we have introduced into the list a number of varieties with very limited stock. We anticipate these running out quickly so if you would like to request a variety marked ‘limited stock’ please order quickly online, or make sure you put a second and third choice on your paper form.
EU/Northern Ireland orders
At present, there is no deal negotiated that enables the EU and UK to continue to move seed across borders as before. Similarly, for those in Northern Ireland, there continues to be uncertainty about the implications of new border arrangements from 1st January 2021. For this reason, we cannot guarantee to be able to fulfil seed orders from outside of the UK or from Northern Ireland after 31st December. To ensure you don’t miss out, please ensure you send your request to us before Monday 14th December. If the situation changes we will let you know.
To help us build up our seed supplies for future years after the disruption to this year’s growing plans, we have had to drop the ‘lucky dip’ option for this year. We hope this doesn’t cause too much disappointment.
Whilst we should have more than enough seed to go around, we are aware that more people may order more than normal as a result of limited seed buying options elsewhere. If you have plenty of seed already we would ask that you consider just requesting the varieties you really want, even if that is fewer than 6. Of course, if you want all 6 that’s absolutely fine, it’s just something to consider.
If you’ve moved house, changed email or made any other change to the details we may hold on file for you, please check before you want to place your order - the sooner we have everything updated the smoother and quicker the process will be.
We hope to be able to have your seeds with you well within our normal timeframe of 28 days, but our processes are trickier this year with only limited team members on site. It may also take a little longer for postal orders to reach us, or for your seed to get to you after it’s been dispatched. We hope you’ll understand this challenge and will be patient as we do the best we can.
If you have any questions please contact us via one of the methods below. Our phone lines are unmanned at the moment but we are picking up our answerphone messages straight away. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org or Tel: 024 7630 8210.
Now we’ve covered the challenges, here’s a taster of what you have to look forward to!
You’ll have 149 varieties to choose from, of which 62 certified organic and 18 are new to the list this year.
There will be 26 varieties of pea, including ‘Mayor of Leicester’, which is a new addition to the collection; Latvian Large Grey Christmas Pea - a good choice for lovers of mushy peas and pease pudding; and old favourite Sutton’s Purple Podded, with its stunning magenta flowers.
You’ll also have the choice of 35 varieties of French bean - 27 climbing and 8 dwarf - including Shirokostruczkovnia (a bit of a mouthful!) donated to us by Harlow Carr Botanic Gardens; District Nurse, a popular Welsh variety; and the wonderfully named Ernie's Big Eye!
The list will be sent to members either by email or in the post depending on how you’ve chosen, on 1st December.
We hope you enjoy this year’s selection and thank you for your support.
