The Carlin Pea revival – self sufficiency in beans and grains

Date
Monday 2 December 2024
Time
7:00pm - 8:00pm

We’re excited to be launching a new citizen science experiment for 2025, looking into the historic Carlin Pea. To kick off the new Members’ Experiment, Josiah Meldrum, founding director of Hodmedods, will be joining us for an online mini workshop. We’ll discuss Josiah’s work, including some of the fascinating stories and traditions behind these crops. And then we’ll discuss more about our ‘Carlin Pea revival’ trial where you will get the chance to grow a number of Carlin Pea varieties in 2025 as part of food security citizen science research.

Hearty nutty Carlin peas have been a tradition for hundreds of years in many parts of the UK especially in the North where they are served as a snack with salt and vinegar on bonfire night. They taste similar to chickpeas but are much better suited to growing in a UK climate. Why not join us to find out how you can improve food security whilst preserving a piece of our heritage in your back garden.

Who are Hodmedods?

Hodmedods is on a mission is to increase the UK self- sufficiency of peas, beans and grains. In a short time it has spearheaded many inspiring projects ranging from growing truly British baked beans to producing the first commercial UK crops of chickpeas, lentils and quinoa.
