Creating a hanging habitat
A hanging bug habitat is a great space-saving idea, providing a comfortable home for beneficial insects if you don't have space for a more traditional habitat.
You can hang it from a wall or tree and it provides a quick and fun project to upcycle old hanging baskets.
You'll need:
- Two wire hanging baskets
- Large piece of cardboard
- Natural materials such as pine cones, straw, seed heads, broken terracotta pots and pieces of bamboo cane
- String or wire
Method:
- Pack all your items into the two hanging baskets making sure nothing will fall out but that there are plenty of nooks and crannies for creatures to nest in.
- Cover one basket with the sheet of cardboard and sandwich it together with the other basket – the cardboard stops everything falling out!
- Remove the cardboard, secure the two baskets together and hang up.
Your hanging habitat will be the perfect home for flying creatures such as bees, ladybirds and beetles.
